BMW presented in Europe the F 450 GS concept, its 450cc adventure bike, which will give rise to a bike with the same characteristics to compete in the medium-displacement segment.

This segment seems to be the talk of the town for many brands. Triumph, for example, already has its 400cc single-cylinders, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X. Another example is Royal Enfield, with its new Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450.

Now, the German company will produce the F 450 GS to fill a gap in its catalog, between the ‘small’ G 310 GS and the F 800 GS. According to the first data released, the new bike will follow more in the line of the F 800 GS, with a lot of off-road capability.

bmw f 450 gs

The design of the new bike is entirely based on its bigger ‘sister’ R 1300 GS, featuring modern and aggressive lines, and Full-LED lighting with the characteristic ‘X’ DRL at the front.

To stand out in the segment, BMW guarantees cutting-edge technological items that are even new to a low/medium displacement model. Highlights include the fully adjustable inverted front suspension and shock absorbers inspired by rally and enduro technologies.

The F 450 GS engine was developed from scratch, it is a 450cc parallel twin cylinder with liquid cooling, capable of generating up to 48 hp of maximum power, and “excellent torque at low revs”, without specifying the numbers.

In terms of technology, the model will come with the advanced BMW Motorrad ABS Pro, configurable riding modes, and a 6.5-inch color TFT panel with Smartphone connection.

Anyway, BMW says it plans to launch the new F 450 GS in 2025.

BMW launched the new R 1300 GS Adventure in Europe, its top-of-the-line adventurous model, which comes with much more technology and practicality, to continue dominating the Big Trail segment.

The main highlights of the R 1300 GS Adventure are the 30-liter tank, the semi-automatic gearbox, the suspension with adaptive height control, and the unprecedented ‘Enduro’ riding mode.

The aluminum fuel tank is the main visible part that differentiates the model from the ‘normal’ R 1300 GS versions. It has its own shape and has points for attaching various accessories.

The semi-automatic transmission, offered as an option, is called Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) by the brand. It automates the clutch and gear changes for those who want to simplify this process, but maintains the system for those who prefer manual gear changes.

As mentioned, another highlight of the model is its additional technology. The R 1300 GS Adventure arrives with the ‘Enduro’ riding mode for off-road riding, in addition to the already known ‘Eco’, ‘Rain’ and ‘Road’. In addition, it has Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) with braking function as standard, Active Cruise Control (ACC), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Change Warning, and the new Rear End Collision Warning (RECW) system.

Furthermore, it has the same base as the R 1300 GS. The centerpiece is its two-cylinder boxer engine, capable of delivering up to 145 HP of maximum power and 149 Nm of torque.

2025 bmw r 1300 gs adventure

Just like its simpler ‘sister’, the new R 1300 GS Adventure comes in four versions: ‘basic’, Triple Black, GS Trophy, and Option 719 Karakorum.

For now, there is still no forecast for the arrival of this model in other markets.

BMW presented the R20 concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, famous for its elegance and historical significance for extraordinary vehicles.

The BMW R20 concept features a modern classic design and the Big Boxer engine as its centerpiece, which consequently takes center stage.

This unique motorcycle is very minimalist, with an extremely short rear end and slender body. With this, the huge engine takes center stage, with each cylinder taking up a lot of space on the sides.

Another piece that stands out in the design is the aluminum fuel tank, which features the “warmer than pink” color from the 1970s.

bmw r20

The engine that powers the concept is the well-known Big Boxer that powers other models of the brand. It has a displacement of 2,000 cc and is air and oil cooled.

Anyway, with this concept, it could be that in the future BMW will launch a Roadster motorcycle with the Big Boxer engine. Currently, the only Roadster with a boxer engine sold by the brand is the R 1250 R, which uses the same engine as the adventurous R 1250 GS.

BMW Motorrad has launched an Automated Gear Shift Assistant for motorcycles, which eliminates the clutch lever, but allows manual shifts via the gearshift pedal.

We can say that the system is similar to the recently launched Honda E-Clutch, the Japanese manufacturer’s electronic clutch, which is available on the CB 650R and CBR 650R as an option.

Of course, we can’t say if it’s more advanced or not, but it works in a similar way. According to BMW, two electromechanical actuators, combined with electronic controls, operate the clutch and gear shifting.

Two modes are offered that can be selected on the left grip: ‘M’ for manual, and ‘D’ for automated. In ‘M’ mode, simply press the clutch pedal to change gears. In ‘D’ mode, the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) and sensors control everything to perform gear changes at the right times.

bmw automated shift assistant

According to the company, if you are in ‘M’ mode and ‘forget’ to change gears when slowing down or stopping, the system also works to prevent the bike from stalling.

In ‘D’ mode, it guarantees precise and smooth gear shifting at the right times, depending on several factors, such as the selected riding mode, engine load, and even the motorcycle’s inclination.

Anyway, riding a BMW motorcycle will be much more enjoyable as you can concentrate on riding and enjoying the scenery, letting the bike do all the work of changing gears and operating the clutch. If you want more dynamic riding, you can still use manual mode. It’s the best of both worlds.

BMW Motorrad, renowned for pushing the boundaries of motorcycle engineering, has once again stirred excitement in the racing world with its groundbreaking development in aerodynamics.

Recent reports reveal that BMW is delving into the realm of active aero for its superbikes, aiming to enhance cornering performance like never before.

Several months back, BMW filed a patent for an unconventional aero system designed to generate downforce during cornering maneuvers. Now, the company has taken another significant step forward by applying for a new patent that employs a radically different approach to achieve the same objective.

While winglets have long been utilized to generate downforce in straight-line racing, the challenge of maintaining traction through corners has persisted due to the inherent lean of motorcycles. Traditional solutions, such as ground-effect bodywork, have proven effective but are somewhat limited in their effectiveness.

bmw active winglets

BMW’s latest patent introduces a remarkably simple yet ingenious solution: winglets that remain parallel to the ground even when the bike leans over. While such technology would be deemed illegal in MotoGP due to regulations prohibiting moving aerodynamic devices, BMW’s absence from MotoGP competition grants them the freedom to explore innovative avenues.

Unlike MotoGP, where active aerodynamics are restricted, the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) presents a more welcoming environment for such advancements. WSBK regulations permit active aerodynamic components, provided they are also present on the production model of the racebike.

BMW’s patent outlines hinged winglets controlled by actuators, ensuring they maintain a horizontal position regardless of the bike’s lean angle. While the technical specifics remain undisclosed, the concept promises to revolutionize cornering performance in superbike racing.

bmw active winglets

Although competitors have yet to adopt active aero components in WSBK, BMW’s pioneering efforts hint at an exciting future for motorcycle aerodynamics.

With the potential to transform cornering dynamics, BMW’s active aero system represents a leap forward in superbike engineering and promises to redefine the limits of performance on and off the track.

Renowned custom motorcycle visionary Paul Yaffe has once again pushed the boundaries of design with his latest creation, the BMW R 18 One Eight “C”.

This one-of-a-kind customization of the BMW R 18 Transcontinental is a true testament to Yaffe’s excellence as a designer, seamlessly blending classic hot rod aesthetics with the distinctive essence of BMW.

The Legend of Paul Yaffe:

Since 1991, Paul Yaffe has been a legendary figure in the US customization scene. As the founder of the American Legend Motorcycle Company (later evolving into Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation), he has earned numerous accolades, including awards for the “Most Beautiful Motorcycle in the World” and “Builder of the Year.” His latest masterpiece, the BMW R 18 One Eight “C,” is set to debut at the MBE Show in Verona, Italy.

Preserving BMW Essence with Hot Rod Inspiration:

Before diving into the customization process, Paul Yaffe embarked on a 3,800-mile journey across the US, followed by an additional 2,600 miles to Sturgis and back, familiarizing himself with the BMW R 18 Transcontinental. The goal was clear: create a big-wheeled “bagger” that retained the authenticity of BMW while delivering a unique aesthetic.

bmw r 18 one eight "C"

A 26” x 5.5” front wheel, cut from a solid 400-pound block of aluminum, set the tone for the customization. The frame was lengthened and inclined to accommodate the new front wheel, inspired by the iconic Mercury Lead Sled of the 1950s. Unique components were crafted, including a steel front fender, restructured fairing, and an exclusive set of Yaffe Monkey Bars.

Classic Lead Sled Aesthetics:

Staying true to the classic Lead Sled aesthetic, Yaffe’s team extended the original rear fender, rearranged taillights, and integrated a license plate area in classic hot rod style. The air suspension and side tubes were meticulously designed, with a focus on preserving the distinctive “BMW feel.”

The side tubes retained the classic Boxer engine exhaust pipes, now enhanced with a custom-made high-flow perforated baffle system. A 3-step muffler system and wide-mouth megaphone were introduced for that characteristic hot rod sound.

bmw r 18 one eight "C"

Aesthetics and Finishing Touch:

With a focus on simplicity and attractiveness, the team perfected all body panels, achieving a glass-like finish. A timeless gloss black exterior, complemented by a classic blood red interior, highlights the bike’s sleek new stance. The contemporary style seat and dash console, created by Guys Upholstery, add the finishing touch to this spectacular masterpiece.

In the end, it’s not just a motorcycle; it’s an artful blend of classic hot rod aesthetics and BMW’s timeless essence. Paul Yaffe’s BMW R 18 One Eight “C” is a true marvel that captures attention and leaves a lasting impression.

In a breathtaking feat of endurance and off-road prowess, the new BMW R 1300 GS, equipped with Metzeler Karoo 4 tyres, has conquered the Nevado Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano.

The journey, spanning from sea level to a staggering altitude of 6,027 meters in less than 24 hours, unfolded on the challenging Circuito de los Seis Miles in the Atacama Desert, Chile.

Embarking from Bahia Inglesa, near the Pacific Ocean, the expedition showcased the remarkable capabilities of the standard BMW R 1300 GS models.

A noteworthy aspect of this accomplishment is that the expedition utilized standard motorcycles and standard tyres, pushing the boundaries of adventure riding. Riding on 19″ front and 17″ rear tyres, the BMW R 1300 GS demonstrated a new dimension in the world of adventure bikes.

bmw r 1300 gs

The climb to Nevado Ojos del Salado presented a formidable challenge, demanding both physical and mental resilience from the riders. The harsh environment, with temperatures plummeting to -20 °C at night and low oxygen levels above 5,000 meters, required meticulous preparation. Base camps were set up at different altitudes, and simulations on Mount Etna in Sicily were conducted to acclimate to the conditions.

The Metzeler Karoo 4 tyres, chosen for their off-road prowess, complemented the BMW R 1300 GS’s advanced rider assistance systems, providing exceptional traction on diverse terrains, from sandy tracks to icy slopes. The expedition’s success underscored the bike’s capabilities in extreme situations, showcasing its off-road expertise and robustness.

This triumph not only marks a milestone for BMW Motorrad but also sets a new standard for adventure riding at unparalleled altitudes.

BMW Motorrad is set to take the riding experience to new heights with the unveiling of their latest prototype, the BMW M 1000 XR.

As a preview of the third M model in BMW Motorrad’s anniversary year, the M 1000 XR combines the cutting-edge technology and high-performance features of the ‘M’ line.

Designed as a long-distance sports bike with exceptional endurance and race-track capabilities, this motorcycle is poised to exceed the highest expectations of riders worldwide.

The letter ‘M’ holds an iconic status within BMW, symbolizing racing triumphs, high-performance engineering, exclusivity, and individuality. In 2019, BMW Motorrad successfully introduced the M range strategy for motorcycles, which has since provided customers with M special equipment and M Performance Parts.

bmw m 1000 xr

Following the brand’s continued commitment to innovation, the M 1000 RR and M 1000 R models emerged as the first two independent M models from BMW Motorrad in subsequent years.

Celebrating 100 years of BMW Motorrad, the M 1000 XR prototype embodies nearly a century of motorsport excellence and acts as a glimpse into the future of supersports motorcycles.

It flawlessly combines the skills required for country road riding, long-distance journeys, and adrenaline-fueled track use, setting a new benchmark for performance in this segment.

At the heart of the M 1000 XR prototype lies an in-line four-cylinder engine derived from the BMW S 1000 RR super sports bike. Leveraging BMW ShiftCam technology, which enables variable valve timing and lift, this engine generates an astounding output of over 147 kW (200 hp).

Remarkably, despite its formidable power, the M 1000 XR maintains a remarkably light DIN empty weight of only 223 kg when fully fueled. With a chassis designed for high-performance road use, exceptional aerodynamics, and cutting-edge control electronics, this crossover bike introduces dynamic riding possibilities that were previously reserved for purebred superbikes.

bmw m 1000 xr

For those seeking even more enhanced performance and reduced weight, the optional M Competition Package is available ex works. The M XR prototype boasts a top speed of approximately 280 km/h, leaving no doubts about its extraordinary capabilities.

Aerodynamics played a pivotal role in the development of the M 1000 XR prototype alongside its drivetrain and suspension technologies. To ensure unrivaled stability at high speeds, the motorcycle is equipped with M winglets. These innovative winglets not only enhance riding stability but also provide greater wheel-to-road contact, particularly during acceleration and at high velocities.

By increasing the load on the front wheel, the winglets mitigate wheelie tendencies, reducing the intervention required from the traction control system. As a result, more power is efficiently converted into acceleration, allowing riders to achieve faster lap times. Furthermore, the front-wheel-oriented seating position enhances overall bike control, especially in supersport mode.

Continuing the tradition set by the M 1000 RR and M 1000 R, the M 1000 XR features the M brake system. Developed using invaluable insights gained from BMW Motorrad’s factory racing machines in the WorldSBK Championship, these brakes offer optimal performance for both track and performance riding. The M brake callipers are distinguished by their striking blue anodized coating, accentuating their connection to the illustrious M lineage.

BMW Motorrad enthusiasts and performance aficionados can eagerly anticipate further details about the BMW M 1000 XR, as BMW Motorrad plans to release additional information in the second half of 2023.

]]>
BMW Motorrad has recently filed several patents indicating the development of an intelligent seat that will be used in future models of the brand.

According to Motorrad website, this seat will feature electric and electronic adjustment options, not only to change the width of the seat, but also to adjust various factors related to ergonomics and comfort, depending on the rider’s height and riding situation.

The patent filings detail various technical approaches that involve the use of electric servo motors to adjust the seat cushions at decisive points, such as the front transition of the seat to the gas tank.

This will allow the seat to be transformed into different shapes and heights, according to the rider’s preferences. A sport seat that extends into a two-passenger seat also appears to be viable.

In addition to the electromechanical devices, BMW is also working on an electro-hydraulic or electro-pneumatic seat that can be quickly transformed by means of air or fluid ducts and chambers within the cushions.

This system will allow the contour and hardness of the seat to be altered even more rapidly, possibly automatically during riding, according to the driving situation.

bmw intelligent seat

The possibility of automatically adjusting the seat during riding is something that could be a major breakthrough in motorcycle seat technology.

For example, inflation in the front area can provide support for the rider during braking, while inflation in the rear area can provide support during acceleration. It is also possible that the massage function may be incorporated into this intelligent seat.

BMW is once again leading the way in terms of technological innovation in its products, and the intelligent seat is another example of this.

Although we do not yet have precise information on when these seats will be implemented in the brand’s production models, it is exciting to see the possibilities that technology is bringing to the world of motorcycles.

Certainly, riders will eagerly await to experience this new level of comfort and technology.

Fred Kodlin, a well-known name in the US customizing scene, has collaborated with his son Len for the first time to customize a BMW R 18 B. The result of their father-son project is the R 18 B HEAVY DUTY, a bike that is a typical Kodlin creation.

The biggest challenge in customizing the R 18 B was remanufacturing the frame to lower the fly-line and seat height. The Kodlin team also created a completely new sheet metal tank that is longer than the original and features indentations on the sides.

In addition, the bike also features a front spoiler with a 3-colour underfloor lighting system, a front mudguard made of sheet metal, and side cases made of glass fibre-reinforced plastic. The technical chassis highlight is an air suspension system that can be lowered and raised in a fraction of a second.

Moreover, the attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the customization, from the winglets above the cylinders that underline the design of the bike, to the side covers that form a smooth transition to the side cases, to the seat made by Kodlin and the instrument cover with covers made of Alcantara and imitation leather.

bmw r 18 b heavy duty

The bike also features a self-created exhaust system, specially made handlebars, and R 18 B loudspeakers by Marshall and an amplifier fitted inside the side cases.

Finally, the paint job on the R 18 B HEAVY DUTY is also a work of art. Marcel Sinnwell airbrushed the colour gradients with translucent paint, inspired by the mixing of colour pigments in the paint and the way they form streaks in the milky basecoat when first stirred. The result is a complex and colourful paint scheme that fits in perfectly with the Daytona bike week.

The R 18 B HEAVY DUTY is a true masterpiece that showcases the creativity and craftsmanship of Fred Kodlin and his team. It’s no wonder that Kodlin has won various important Daytona shows regularly and was the first non-US citizen to be inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame.

With this project, Kodlin has proved that the next generation at Kodlin Bikes is already in the starting blocks, with Len providing a lot of creative input. The BMW R 18 B HEAVY DUTY is undoubtedly one of the most unique and impressive custom bikes of the year, and a true testament to the Kodlin legacy.

BMW‘s single-cylinder models could get a high-tech upgrade! The iconic G 310 R and G 310 GS can be equipped with the ShiftCam technology, featuring variable valve timing and lift, according to a new patent filling.

This cutting-edge advancement promises to take your riding experience to the next level, with improved power delivery and performance. It is currently in use on top models such as the R 1250 GS and S 1000 RR.

ShiftCam alters cam timing and valve lift by shifting the inlet camshaft, providing a conservative cam profile at low revs for increased torque. The low-rpm cam lobe also reduces overlap, improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

At high RPMs, the low-lift cam profile fails to deliver enough air-fuel mixture. ShiftCam switches to a more aggressive cam profile with greater lift and duration, allowing more air and fuel for increased power and torque. Advanced valve timing increases overlap without compromising efficiency or emissions.

bmw shiftcam

The ShiftCam system in the new patent is similar to that found in the R 1250 and S 1000 engines, but tailored for a more compact single-cylinder design. The solenoid actuator is located between the two intake valves, allowing for a conventional-length camshaft.

In addition, the spark plug is fitted at an angle, and an additional idler gear connects the intake and exhaust cams. The camshaft slides, rather than relying on a direct chain drive from the crankshaft.

So far, there is still no confirmation that the G 310 R and G 310 GS will receive this technology, but this possibility is very high since, together with the C 400 scooter, they are the company’s only single-cylinder models currently being produced.
